Winbury Memories from Barry Lewis

To be honest I remember very little of my days at Winbury except that I enjoyed it a lot! I started at Winbury in 1945 or 1946 before John Spicer had arrived at the school. I started off school life at Mrs Plumridge's Nursery School in Cookham. I remember travelling back from Winbury after school on the bus to Cookham Dene. The ticket was 2 1/2d and if I was given 3d I could buy a bun with the remaining 1/2d! On one occasion I had a white £5 note - the bus conductor was not impressed! I do remeber being a good runner and winner of the sprint races on sports days. Actually there is a video clip on the Gallery page of this website, of me running in 1947!

I left Winbury for Sandroyd School in Wiltshire which was a disaster and I only stayed for 2 or 3 terms before moving to Kingsmead School in Seaford, Sussex which was a success and thence to Rugby School on a scholarship and eventually another scholarship to Trinity Hall Cambridge where I studied Law ending up with a First - must have been Winbury's excellent grounding! I practised as a solicitor from 1965 and am now retired and living in the South of England but I spend 8 months of the year in Thailand. I appear in the 1949 School Photo (G5) on the Gallery page - I'm one in on the far left of the back row. You will see from my more recent photo, I lost my curls somewhere along the way!
