Winbury OLd Boys and Founder Lady Members Reunion - March 24th 2012
Introduction by Mike Crees

For the first time in over 60 years some 45 or so Old Boys and Girls met for a Reunion at Sheephouse Farm in Maidenhead by kind permission of Peter Prior who also attended the school . His recently refurbished barn made an ideal venue and on the day the sun shone brilliantly and the food and drink was well received.

Guests came from far and wide including one old boy, Mike Sinclair, who made the journey from Nova Scotia! This was an epic occasion , most people having been out of touch for several decades and the big question was "Would we recognise each other from those early days?"

Reunion: The act of reuniting; the state of being reunited; but the English Oxford Dictionary states, and it is this definition that feels right is: "a meeting or social gathering of friends" .and that is exactly what it was on the 24th March when nearly fifty Winbury Old Boys gathered for their reunion, in Maidenhead this year.

Although for a good many of us, it had been nearly fifty years since we had been in each other's company, and despite that length of time , the conversation flowed very easily.

Our Guest of Honour, was; Diana Nicholas-Gomol the sister of Rory Nicholas, who was one of the first Winbury Head Boys. Rory Nicholas died in Hong Kong in 2008.

We held a toast for our old Headmaster Mr John Bullen Spicer, who died in the 1980s; his kindness and respect he had for "his boys" as he affectionately referred to us, touched all our lives in many different ways.

Through the last few years, we have discovered that Winbury was founded much earlier, than was first thought and was co-educational until 1946, and it was a real pleasure to find that we had "Lady Founder Members" as well and it was a real pleasure to meet Susan Jones and Judy Westacott.

The support and generosity of Peter Prior, and the very strong support of the Spicer family; Mike, Barbara, Joe and James….and not forgetting Will on the barbeque, helped to make the occasion very special indeed.

It was agreed to hold another "Reunion" next year and that is in the planning stage at the moment. Peter has offered the barn again, for which we are very grateful. We would like to encourage more "Old Boys from the later years 1960 to 1972 to attend.

From the first meeting with Mike Chapman in 2009, and over the last three years Mike has worked very hard to make this Reunion the success it was and I thank him for his unwavering support and friendship.

I must mention one thing on the photography side. If I didn't manage to photograph everybody, please do not take offence but as advancing years take a toll and multiskilling can get a little challenging. I f any of you took photographs at the reunion please send them into Mike Caridia (mike@pa-assist.com) so he can add them to the pictorial record of the day, below.
