It
was a cold blustery morning when we set up the Fishing Lodge by
the lake at Sheephouse Farm in readiness for our second reunion.
The weather indicated it would probably be held indoors but by
the afternoon the sun had come out and the wind abated a little.
Peter
Prior had prepared a cricket pitch, marked out the wicket and
brought in a bowling machine to fire salvos at the defending batsmen
but in the end none of us made the journey from Fishing Lodge
to Cricket Field! Was it that the conversations were too convivial
and the food too tempting or perhaps that we did not fancy our
chances against the deadly machine.
This
was the second Winbury Old Boys (and Girls) reunion and about
forty people turned up. On this occasion we invited wives and
partners and were delighted at how many of them came along. It
was unfortunate that we had chosen a Bank Holiday weekend for
the occasion and consequently many who would have joined us had
other family and holiday commitments. We will try not to make
the same mistake again.
We
were delighted to welcome Martin Kemp and his daughter-in-law
Sarah Aplin to entertain us. Martin was at the school in the late
40s and early 50s. After a successful career as a lawyer he gave
this up to turn his attention to his true love of jazz and plays
both that and classical music professionally. He entertained us
with his sax and clarinet playing whilst Sarah who is a professional
jazz singer sang throughout the afternoon. We are grateful to them
both for coming.
It
was good to welcome two Old Boys from the 1940s who now live abroad.
Barry Lewis flew in from Thailand and Peter Harding from Houston
Texas. Others descended on Maidenhead from all over the UK and
from over the border in Scotland.
There
were lots of photos on display as well as other reminders of our
days in the "pink and blue". Our webmaster Mike Caridia had put
together a screen presentation of all the photos on our website.
If you have any photos tucked away in your attic or in a cupboard
Mike would be glad to have copies to put on the website. This
is part of Winbury history !
The
Hog Roast and Lamb Roast were prepared by Will who was with us
last year . The food was enjoyed by all with the usual supply
of excellent wine and beer selected and provided by Mike Spicer. Thanks
are due to Barbara and Annie for their help with the other food
and Mike Crees and I were happy to be involved to set things up
once again. We are indebted to Peter Prior for the use of his
Fishing Lodge and grounds and for his generous support in so many
ways.
It
was another great reunion and we are thinking of repeating the
event next year. We hope there will be an even better turn out.
Thank you all for coming and helping to make the occasion so enjoyable.
If any of you took photographs at the reunion please send them
into Mike Caridia (mikec@mcapres.com) so he can add them to the
pictorial record of the day, below.
